IWMI seeks to hire a well qualified Communications Specialist to be responsible for the development and implementation of communication work plans and activities. The Communications Specialist should be able to identify and distill key messages from our scientific research and present this in ways that capture attention and stimulate action.

It is envisaged in the first instance that the Africa Communications Specialist will work on the IMAWESA (Improved Management of Agricultural Water in Eastern and Southern Africa) network, other projects in the region and also contribute to corporate information and communications.

The position reports to the Director, Communications and Marketing with day to day supervision by the Regional Director Africa with whom the position is co-located. The location will be either the IWMI West Africa Office in Accra, Ghana or IWMI East Africa & Nile Basin Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Our mission is to overcome poverty through the better management of land and water resources. Overall Purpose:

To provide communciations support for IWMI’s research projects in the Africa region.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement communication strategies for research projects and initiatives;

• Develop communication tools for targeted audiences eg brochures, flyers, posters, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters and websites;

• Write and edit communication materials;

• Coordinate and supervise production of communication tools with input from partners and suppliers both nationally and internationally;

• Organize media activities and write media releases and prepare press kits;

• Support IWMI partners’ communications within initiatives;

• Work closely with IWMI’s corporate communications group to ensure messages are aligned and IWMI is appropriately represented in all communications;

• Contribute to regional and project information for IWMI’s corporate communication outlets.

Selection Criteria:

The following outlines the attributes required and the criteria against which applications will be assessed.
Qualifications:
ESSENTIAL
• University degree in English, Journalism, Communications or a related field, or equivalent

DESIRABLE
• A recognized qualification in a natural science, ideally water or agriculture

Experience and Knowledge ESSENTIAL
• Minimum five years experience in communications
• Experience in writing on scientific and development issues

DESIRABLE
• Experience of working in agricultural or water sciences
Skills and Abilities: ESSENTIAL
• Excellent command of English, with excellent writing and editing skills
• Ability to grasp scientific and technical information and distil into communication materials
• Good organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks
• A positive team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people from a wide variety of cultures
• Willingness to travel within Africa and if necessary to other regions

This is a regionally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and institute’s needs.

Applications are invited for two EDCTP-funded post-doctoral fellowships based at the Lung Infection and Immunity Unit, Division of Pulmonology, Department of Medicine, University of Cape Town. The Unit has a track record of high quality publications and high calibre candidates are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility: Individuals who have achieved their PhD degree within the past 5 years in a relevant discipline. Applicants should have a track record of high impact publications and experience in cell culture, molecular biology, proteomics, flow cytometry, and must be willing to work with human samples.
Description of research and duties:
The first research project will involve novel tools and new technologies for the diagnosis of TB. This will include relevant immunological and molecular biological studies. The specific research work will involve real-time PCR, flow cytometry and tissue culture using human biological samples. Previous experience in these techniques is mandatory. Previous experience in TB immunological research work, with a particular focus on biomarkers and flow cytometry, would be highly recommended.
The second project is proteomics-based and involves direct differential mass spectrometry-based analysis of human specimens to identify potential biomarkers of active and latent TB disease. Previous experience in small molecule, peptide or lipid mass spec analysis as well as in mass spec sample preparation, liquid chromatography and mass spec data analysis will be essential.
Prior experience in the project management of large research grants would also be a bonus for both fellowships.
Tenure and Value: The value of these fellowships is R170 000 each per annum (tax free). An application to SARS for tax-exemption is made by the University on behalf of the successful candidate.
The tenure of the fellowship is 1 year, but may be renewable for a further 2-3 years, contingent on satisfactory progress and availability of funds.
The successful applicants must be prepared to comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures and practices for post-doctoral fellows.

IWMI seeks a post-doctoral fellow (PDF) to work within the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) funded project ‘Improving Sustainability of Impacts of Agricultural Water Management Interventions in Challenging Contexts.’ The goal of this project is to enhance livelihoods of poor rural farming communities in challenging contexts through improved knowledge on Agricultural Water Management (AWM). One of the expected outputs is operational guidelines for relevant AWM interventions under different challenging institutional contexts. Project and program designs in AWM often assume good governance and supportive conditions, even though in reality they are not in place. In fact, existing institutional conditions in AWM can be very diverse and thus approaches to successful AWM interventions will vary accordingly. Particularly, but not exclusively, in fragile states and post-conflict regions special attention should be given to the context-specific requirements of such interventions. AWM investment strategies should be based on pragmatic assessment of the existing governance capacity of the institutional context. To implement this, in several African countries, we seek a PDF.

The main task will be to implement the context analysis at both national and local level and assess the institutional context relevant to agricultural water management interventions.

• Assess the institutional context relevant to agricultural water management at both national and local (case study) level, using the methodology developed by the project
• Apply the method to three selected African countries based on review of literature and relevant documents

• Provide input in the development of contextual guidelines for agricultural water management interventions
