Regional Laboratory Technical Advisor for Horn of Africa : Djibouti, Djibouti
The laboratory technical advisor will be responsible for coordinating laboratory aspects of research and surveillance projects developed by U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3), an infectious disease research institute in Cairo, Egypt, that conducts scientific research and public health initiatives throughout West and North Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Djibouti. Projects currently in progress include integrated hospital-based infectious disease surveillance, laboratory-based surveillance for multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, surveillance for sexually transmitted infections and innovative surveillance for endemic and emerging vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens. In addition, the laboratory technical advisor will be responsible for organization and supervision of laboratory training activities and oversight of the development of the Djiboutian central public health laboratory (CPHL).
The laboratory technical advisor will: Plan and oversee microbiological surveillance activities and research projects to serve program purposes • Monitor and evaluate progress in microbiological surveillance • Assure accuracy and reproducibility of results under field conditions • Provide general supervision for scientific activities in the different sections of the laboratories • Provide technical guidance for multi-disciplinary field teams • Establish standard laboratory procedures to ensure safety, quality control, appropriate use of reagents and technical proficiency, including, but not limited to, bacterial isolation and identification, assays for the assessment of immunity to infectious diseases, DNA/RNA hybridization methods, and immunochemical techniques for identifying, purifying and standardizing antigens and antibodies • Oversee data entry and management of laboratory data • Review and present research conclusions for quarterly and annual progress reports, as well as manuscripts, abstracts and presentations • Responsible for personnel actions and activities and for the financial management of NAMRU-3 laboratory functions including salaries for all personnel; purchase of required research materials, supplies, and equipment; and travel for meetings, training or presentation of survey results • Serve as liaison between NAMRU-3 and the Djiboutian CPHL • Perform various duties in conjunction with section operations.

Applications are invited for two EDCTP-funded post-doctoral fellowships based at the Lung Infection and Immunity Unit, Division of Pulmonology, Department of Medicine, University of Cape Town. The Unit has a track record of high quality publications and high calibre candidates are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility: Individuals who have achieved their PhD degree within the past 5 years in a relevant discipline. Applicants should have a track record of high impact publications and experience in cell culture, molecular biology, proteomics, flow cytometry, and must be willing to work with human samples.
Description of research and duties:
The first research project will involve novel tools and new technologies for the diagnosis of TB. This will include relevant immunological and molecular biological studies. The specific research work will involve real-time PCR, flow cytometry and tissue culture using human biological samples. Previous experience in these techniques is mandatory. Previous experience in TB immunological research work, with a particular focus on biomarkers and flow cytometry, would be highly recommended.
The second project is proteomics-based and involves direct differential mass spectrometry-based analysis of human specimens to identify potential biomarkers of active and latent TB disease. Previous experience in small molecule, peptide or lipid mass spec analysis as well as in mass spec sample preparation, liquid chromatography and mass spec data analysis will be essential.
Prior experience in the project management of large research grants would also be a bonus for both fellowships.
Tenure and Value: The value of these fellowships is R170 000 each per annum (tax free). An application to SARS for tax-exemption is made by the University on behalf of the successful candidate.
The tenure of the fellowship is 1 year, but may be renewable for a further 2-3 years, contingent on satisfactory progress and availability of funds.

AEON is a new interdisciplinary institute based in the Faculty of Science that will focus on Earth Systems and Earth Stewardship Science. As part of this initiative, a modern Earth Science Laboratory serves as a national and continental facility for geochronology, geochemistry and palaeomagnetism (to be developed).
We invite applications for a position as Chief geochronologist to take responsibility for the management of laboratory services and the day-to-day operation of a MC-ICP-MS dedicated to geochronology by single mineral laser ablation dating using the U-Pb system.
The minimum qualification is a PhD with at least 5 years hands-on experience in ICP-MS for isotope radiogenic analyses. The successful applicant will be expected to train young African scientists to enable them in these same tasks.

As Pharmacovigilance Officer you will ensure effective and accurate collection, database entry and reporting of safety data. The role will require you to be responsible for the all operational pharmacovigilance activities for assigned developmental and marketed products.
In addition you will be tasked with
Negotiating and finalising safety data exchange agreements with affiliates and agents
Ensuring compliance of the various parties to the SDEA
Co-ordinating all ADR investigations
Overseeing any clinical or post-marketing surveillance trials
Reviewing representative training material from a clinical perspective and ensure compliance with the labeling
Reviewing any new labelling to ensure all clinical parameters are in line with relevant regulations.
Who we're looking for
We seek an individual who is looking to make an impact! If this is you read on.
You will already have a track record of success in the pharmacovigilance field preferably gained within the EU. This will have included knowledge of clinical trial methodology and pharmacovigilance regulations as well as work with safety databases including simple searches and coding dictionaries, Clintrace is preferred.

Excellent verbal and written skills - fluency in English essential.
Problem solving and attention to detail
Advanced organisation and interpersonal skills
International experience
This role is based in Mauritius with an international remit, as such candidates must be willing to relocate and travel.
